About William G. Cottrell
Bill has been in private practice for his entire professional career, dedicating decades to a wide variety of legal matters. Over the years, he has litigated several hundred cases to trial and handled thousands of motions. In addition to his extensive litigation experience, Bill has successfully mediated numerous civil lawsuits, achieving favorable settlements for his clients.
While the primary focus of his practice is on consumer and commercial debt collection, Bill also handles cases involving Family Law, Commercial Litigation, Sexual Harassment, and other legal matters. In recent years, he has been particularly successful in helping many clients exit unwanted timeshare agreements, providing them with critical relief from burdensome obligations.
He is licensed to practice law in Minnesota and is well-versed in the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), having defended collection agencies as well as representing consumers in related disputes.
Bill served as an Adjunct Professor at his alma mater, William Mitchell College of Law, for 11 years, where he taught Creditor-Debtor law. His expertise has earned him the preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell and Lexis-Nexis for the last 15 years, a testament to his standing in the legal community.
In addition to his practice, Bill has published numerous articles on debt collection and has been a speaker at multiple Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminars. He is also an approved and qualified neutral under Rule 114 for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Minnesota, further expanding his role in helping parties resolve conflicts outside of the courtroom.
